A volume knob for every app.
The video call too quiet, the browser too loud, a chat app pinging over your music? WayMix puts a slider for every app that plays sound in your Mac's menu bar.
Three pretend apps start making sound. Drag their sliders, scroll over them, or mute one. Put your headphones on.
Everything you hear is made by your browser on the spot. In the real app, the sliders move the sound of your real apps.
Every app, its own level
Music, calls, browsers, games: each one gets a slider, from silent to full. Lower one without touching the others.
Mute without quitting
One click silences an app and another brings it back, right where it was.
Precise control
Set each app exactly as loud as you want it, from a whisper to full volume, with fine steps all along the slider.
Out of the way
Only an icon in the menu bar. An app at 100% is left alone; WayMix steps in only for the apps you change.
Private by design
No account and nothing collected. The sound stays on your Mac and is never recorded.
Remembers your levels WayMix+
Leave a tip of any amount in the app and WayMix+ is yours: every app goes back to the level you left it at, each time WayMix opens.
How it works
From download to quieter in a minute
Get it from the Mac App Store
WayMix is free. Open it and a knob appears in your menu bar, near the clock. There's no window and no Dock icon.
Click the knob
The panel lists every app that can play sound, in alphabetical order. A small dot next to a name means it's playing right now; "Waiting for audio" means it's open but quiet. Its level applies as soon as it plays.
Drag a slider below 100%
The first time, macOS asks whether WayMix may capture other apps' audio. Allow it: that is how WayMix makes an app quieter. You can change this later in System Settings › Privacy & Security.
Fine-tune and mute
Drag a slider, or scroll over it with your mouse or trackpad for small steps. Click the speaker in front of a slider to mute that app; click again to bring it back.
Set it and forget it
Behind the gear: open WayMix at login, so it's always in your menu bar. With WayMix+, it also puts every app back at the level you left it. The power button quits WayMix and gives every app its normal volume back.
Questions
Before you ask
Does WayMix record or listen to my audio?
No. It adjusts the level of an app's sound and plays it straight to your output. Nothing is stored, recorded or sent anywhere.
Does it use my microphone?
No. WayMix never touches microphones. The only permission it asks for is to capture other apps' audio, so it can play them louder, quieter or not at all.
Which apps does it work with?
Any app that plays sound: Music, Spotify, Safari, Chrome, Zoom, FaceTime, games and more. Helpers that play sound for a browser or for Mail are grouped under the app they belong to.
Can I send an app to a different speaker, or record it?
Not in WayMix. Routing, several outputs at once, virtual microphones and recording are coming in WayMix Pro.
Which Macs are supported?
Any Mac with macOS 14.6 Sonoma or later.
What does WayMix+ add?
WayMix+ makes WayMix remember: each app's level and mute come back the next time WayMix opens, after a restart too. Without it, levels last until you quit. Any tip from WayMix's settings unlocks it, whatever the amount, and it comes back with "Restore purchase" on a new Mac. Prefer a fresh start every time? Turn "Remember each app's volume and mute" off in Settings.
It's free. How do I support it?
If WayMix earns its place in your menu bar, leave a tip from its settings, through the App Store. Your first tip unlocks WayMix+, and you can tip again any time.
WayMix Pro: your Mac's whole sound, in one mixer
Per-app volume is only the start. WayMix Pro does what usually takes four separate apps (one for app volumes, one for streaming to speakers, one for virtual devices and one for recording) in a single window.
Route any app anywhere
Send each app, and each microphone or interface input, to any output, or to several at once.
Up to four virtual mics
Build a mix of apps and inputs, and pick it as a microphone in Zoom, OBS or any other app.
Record what you hear
Record apps, inputs or whole mixes, each to its own file, with record dots right in the mixer.
Presets
Save a whole setup (a podcast, a stream, a call) and switch to it in one click from the menu bar.
Hold-to-listen monitor
Hear any source or mix on your headphones without changing what goes out.
MIDI control
Map faders and buttons on your controller to any slider, mute or preset.
